The city of Curitiba (PR) inaugurated this Tuesday (17) the first part of the Future Water Reserve, with capacity for 43 million liters of water as an emergency supply alternative. The place also has a park aimed at leisure for the population.
The new water reservoir passes through the neighborhoods of Caximba, Campo de Santana, Umbará and Ganchinho, in its first section. It is approximately 26 km long, 70% of which is water and lakes.
The area also has the Futuro Hídrica Reserva Park, on Nicola Pellanda Street, in the Umbará neighborhood. The place is aimed at leisure for the population and has a viewpoint, overlooking the lakes and green areas.
The space has attractions such as a model with an embossed map of the city of Curitiba, a cycle path, parking, an environmental education center and an exhibition area.
The city of Curitiba invested R$4.5 million in the first stage of the project. The municipal secretary of the Environment, Marilza Dias, highlighted the importance of the project as an adaptation to climate change.
“The biggest risks in our region are intense rain in a short period of time and also the lack of rain, in other words, water scarcity. This Future Water Reserve project aims to adapt the city to climate change”, explained Dias.
Alongside his family, Mayor Rafael Greca highlighted that the project is his greatest legacy for Curitiba. “We are ensuring that the city never again has a water shortage and that it does not suffer from climate change,” said Greca.
