Current Covid contagion rate in Brazil is unprecedented, evaluates mathematician

The contagion rate of Covid-19 in Brazil reached 2.10. Wallace Casaca, mathematician and coordinator of the Info Tracker platform, told CNN that this number means something unprecedented in the history of Brazil, which has reached a record rate.

Casaca explains that the high number of new cases will continue to increase in the coming weeks.

“The positive news is that the rate will start to fall, the negative news is that we are at a very high level”, he said. The mathematician points out that in the medium term, it is to be expected that new contagions will begin to decline.

“And with that, we will observe this reduction impacting on deaths, but it will take a little more time.”

Asked whether the high demand for testing in the country can influence the rate of infection by coronavirus, Casaca explains that there has never been a massive testing process in the country.

“What we see now is that people have been looking for health laboratories and pharmacies […] In fact, there is a contribution that people are looking for more, but in fact, what makes this increase in transmission rate so high, is the Omicron variant.”

The coordinator of the Info Tracker platform points out that some regions that have already had an ascension of the variant, should start to have a peak of descent in the coming weeks.

“The first aspect to consider is that the Ômicron variant leads to large spikes in a very short period of time. We expect absurdly high peaks, but the cycle that the virus affects the person is smaller.”

In a second moment, Casaca points to vaccination as an important factor so that the death rate has not reached the same level as in early 2021, when the country reached more than 3 thousand deaths.

“Vaccination meant that our deaths did not reach the sad marks we saw in March. [de 2021], of three thousand deaths. Of course, we cannot minimize Omicron at any time. It will most likely reach a thousand deaths per day, which is very serious. But, on the other hand, the vaccine ends up contributing in a very positive way to pulling this data down faster and faster”, he explains.
