Current economic situation in Brazil should interfere in the election, says CEO of Quaest

The political scientist and CEO of Quaest, Felipe Nunes, declared, this Wednesday (8), in an interview with CNN that the economic situation should interfere with the results of this year’s elections.

“If the report is rich, Brazil is poor. This is making a difference. At this moment, we realize that the economy, which has always played a fundamental role in the presidential elections, especially when we have candidates for reelection in the process, this year it seems that the weight will be even greater”, said Nunes.

“The higher the income, the more they vote for Bolsonaro, the lower the income, the more they vote for Lula. This social polarization is very clear,” he explains.

In the Genial/Quaest survey released this Wednesday, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appears ahead, with 46% of voting intentions in the first round, followed by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), with 30% . Then came Ciro Gomes (PDT), with 7%; André Janones (Avante) with 2%; and Simone Tebet (MDB) and Pablo Marçal (Pros), with 1% each.

Among the general problems that most worry voters, the economy remains the most cited. The topic was remembered by 44% of respondents, followed by health/pandemic (15%), social issues and corruption (11% each), and violence (8%), according to the survey.

Inflation, which reached 12.13% in the 12 months until April, according to the IPCA (Broad Consumer Price Index), is the main economic issue pointed out by Brazilian voters.

“Other evidence from the research also helps us to understand this: for 44% of Brazilians, the economy is the main problem faced so far. And when we open this data from the 44%, the main concern is the increase in prices”, said Nunes.
