Current NBA champions, Warriors select Brazilian Gui Santos in the draft

Brazilian winger Guilherme Santos, from Minas Tênis Clube, was chosen by the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Draft, which took place on Thursday night (23). On social media, he celebrated the selection: “I love you guys. Emotion was a million here,” he wrote.

The 20-year-old was chosen in the second round of the event, in 55th place. In this way, Gui’s contract is not guaranteed, but the rights to the player now belong to the Warriors in the NBA.

For Minas, the winger played in 46 games last year, averaging 10.5 points, 5 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 25.8 minutes per game in Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) and in the Champions League of the Americas. For his good performance, he was one of 13 guests to join the World Team at the Nike Hoop Summit event last year.

The Warriors are the reigning NBA champions, winning this month after beating the Boston Celtics 4-2 in the Finals. Given the quality of the Golden State squad, it is unlikely that Gui will be part of the initial rotation this year. Initially, the winger should play for the Santa Cruz Warriors, a team from the G-League, an NBA development league.

Gui is the first Brazilian chosen in the Draft since 2019, when Didi Louzada was selected by the Atlanta Hawks. In addition to the two, Brazilian Raul Neto also plays in the NBA, but is currently out of contract after finishing last season with the Washington Wizards.
