Ancient curses citing the wrath of the gods were discovered in a series of mysterious tombs under a historic hospital. Excavations at the former Porte Madeleine Hospital in Orleans, France, revealed dozens of men’s burials dating back to the Roman Empire. And in many of the graves, curse paintings were found, known as Defixio. They invoke the Roman gods to punish various bad people whose names are mentioned. Project managers, Caroline Miliro and Julien Curtua, reported that 22 paintings have been found so far in 11 graves, increasing the number of Defixio discovered in France by 50%.
