Cuteness Alert: Bear Takes “Selfies” on Wildlife Cam

Insufferably adorable.

A wildlife camera in Colorado, USA, captured around 400 “bear selfies” after a curious black bear began investigating the device.

Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks posted some of the pictures on Twitter last Monday (23).

“Recently, a bear discovered a wildlife camera that we use to monitor wildlife in the #Boulder open space,” the park system wrote.

“Of the 580 photos captured, around 400 were bear selfies.”

Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks operates 9 cameras on its 46,000 acres of land.

The motion-activated cameras take a photograph when they sense an animal’s movement and then record videos that are 10 to 30 seconds long, according to an August release from the City of Boulder.

Information from the cameras helps park staff learn about wildlife behavior and protect critical areas of their habitat, according to the release.

“Motion detection cameras provide us with a unique opportunity to learn more about how local species use the landscape around us while minimizing our presence in sensitive habitats,” said Will Keeley, senior wildlife ecologist at Boulder Open Space and Mountain. Parks, in the statement.

“These cameras play an important role in helping the OSMP team to identify important wildlife areas. The information we collect from them is used to recommend habitat protection measures to help protect sensitive natural areas.”

The City of Boulder told the CNN that there are no known brown bears in Colorado, only black bears.

According to a 2015 report published by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, measuring the size of the black bear population in the state is difficult due to the species’ “solitary and elusive” nature.

The department said the “conservative estimate” was that there were between 17,000 and 20,000 bears in the state.
