Cutting off Russian natural gas ‘the most likely option’, according to the French economy minister

French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire called for preparations for a “complete cut” of Russian gas supplies, “the most likely option” he said, during economic meetings in Aix-en-Provence, southern France.

“Let’s prepare for the total cutoff of Russian natural gas, which is currently the most likely option. It requires us to accelerate our energy independence,” the French finance minister said.

“We are extremely independent, we don’t like to depend on others. The first independence has to be energetic,” he continued.

“We have to put ourselves in a fighting position now to organize, redirect, restrain, reduce consumption… now we have to make the decisions,” the economy minister explained.

He thus referred to the 100% renationalization of the French energy company EDF, announced this week by Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne.

According to Lemaire, this “absolute unity of command” will allow “faster decisions to be made on the strategic issue of carbon-free electricity generation in France”.

The energy crisis is for the minister “the most important issue of the coming months” and we must prepare for a total interruption of natural gas supply.

“We are facing an energy crisis that can have an absolutely significant impact on our daily lives, on employment, on the operation of our companies, on the French industrial tool,” the French minister underlined.

He clarified that he has not yet received the approval of the European Commission for the nationalization of EDF.

“I have had long discussions with (Competition Commissioner) Margrethe Vestager on this matter, so we will continue our very long discussions,” added the minister.
