Russian hackers have recently attempted to infiltrate NATO networks and the armed forces of some Eastern European countries, according to a report by Google’s Threat Analysis Group released today.
The report does not specify which armed forces were targeted by the “e-fishing campaigns” launched by the Russian-based group Coldriver or Callisto.
The attack was carried out using new Gmail accounts to non-Google accounts, so its success rate is unknown, according to the report https://blog.google/threat-analysis-group/tracking-cyber-activity-eastern- europe.
Russia has been accused of various cyber-attacks against Western targets in recent years, but has systematically denied the allegations.
In 2019, cybersecurity firm F-Secure Labs identified the Callisto team as an unidentified threat posed by gathering information on foreign and security policy in Europe.
The hacker team also attacked a NATO Center of Excellence, according to the report, without further details.
In a statement, NATO said, without elaborating on Google’s Threat Analysis Group report: “We detect malicious e-activity on a daily basis.”
“NATO Centers of Excellence is cooperating with the Alliance, but they are not in themselves part of NATO. We are in contact with them on this matter,” the statement said.
