Cyclists, Italy badly: one death every two days since the beginning of 2021

14 deaths in January, 17 in February. These are the data of theTraffic Police Supporters and Friends Association and concern cyclists. In the first two months of the year, 31 people died on Italian roads, one every two days. All were on bicycles.

The report of theCyclists Observatory says that from 1 to 28 February 17 cyclists, 15 men and 2 women, 13 Italian citizens and 4 foreigners died in Italy. The figures are up compared to those of 2019 when they were 15 and of 2018 with 10 deaths.

According to Asaps, the introduction of mobility restrictions due to the pandemic has not benefited cyclists who are weak road users such as pedestrians. Among the accidents there are also cases of road piracy. In one case out of every four fatal accidents involving cyclists, the perpetrator flees. It happened in Vittoria, in the Ragusa area, in Aprilia, in the province of Lecce and in the province of Treviso.

I am 29 i cyclists hospitalized in red code with a reserved prognosis, in February, an increase compared to 22 in January. With ICUs busy due to Covid, the situation is even more difficult.

The region with the highest number of accidents is Emilia-Romagna: 3 in February, 8 since the beginning of the year. There are also three in Veneto and Sicily. There are 2 in Puglia, 2 in Lombardy, 1 in Tuscany, Piedmont, Lazio and Abruzzo. Among the victims two minors and 5 over 60 in February. 11 cars, 5 trucks and a motorcycle are investing.

The data are worrying in perspective according to Giordano Biserni President of Asaps: “A death every two days in the colder months leads us to think about what might happen in the warmer months. Precisely with the mildest temperatures, 6 cyclists died in three days, between 23 and 25 February. We will never tire of saying that piracy has not been defeated in recent years, indeed it has returned in a preponderant way, 6 cases out of 31 fatal since the beginning of the year. Too many escapes because the vehicle is uncovered by insurance, or because the driver is without a license or because it is revoked or suspended, or because in a state of intoxication or distracted by the use of the cell phone ».
