An extratropical cyclone formed off the south coast of Brazil helped to provoke intense storms in cities in southern Bahia this week, which is expected to continue this Friday (10).
At least 30 cities declared an emergency situation. In the city of Itamaraju, three people from the same family were buried after a landslide hit at least six houses. The most serious situation was identified in the municipality of Jucuruçu, which was submerged after rivers overflowed.
The government of Bahia started a task force and sent three aircraft to respond specifically to urgent social defense demands, informed the state administration.
The governor of Bahia, Rui Costa (PT), stated that government studies will support the definition of actions to rebuild what was destroyed by the rain.
“We are going to carry out a detailed survey of everything that needs to be rebuilt: roads, bridges and houses that were destroyed. But you can only do this survey after the water goes down, because you need to see the damage, in fact, and the technical solution that will be given at each point where that infrastructure was lost”, he declared.
According to meteorologists, the cyclone formed in the South Atlantic should intensify even more this Friday, but it does not pass close to the Brazilian coast.
The low pressure center that formed the phenomenon is further north than usual, which made it form a front at the height in the northeast of Minas Gerais, north of Espírito Santo and west and south of Bahia.
