Heavy rains hit the state of Tamil Nadu, in southern India, this Saturday (30), as cyclone Fengal approaches the country. The storm is expected to make landfall in India on Saturday night, local time.
Winds of up to 80 kilometers per hour are expected, according to meteorologists.
Residents of at-risk areas have been moved to temporary shelters in cities such as Chengalpattu on India’s east coast. There are already records of flooding there.
Disorders in Sri Lanka
In the neighboring country, Sri Lanka, authorities issued a red alert this Saturday for adverse weather conditions. The country’s coastline should be affected by residual effects of the cyclone, although the phenomenon has already moved away from the island and towards India.
Rains caused the flooding of large portions of agricultural land, causing losses to producers.
Teams, including from the Navy, continue operations to help those affected, while aid does not reach those affected through NGOs and government agencies.
Bad weather in Asia
Other Asian countries also face extreme weather. In Thailand, at least nine people died because of the floods. Across the country, around 550,000 families were affected by the flooding, which began four days ago.
Malaysia also suffers from storms. More than 90,000 people were displaced after floods in the east of the country. At least three people died.
