Ophelia, downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, brought more rain and wind as it moved along the US Atlantic coast, meteorologists said on Sunday (24).
The weather system made landfall near Emerald Isle, North Carolina, on Saturday, where it inundated the region with torrential rain and relentless winds that caused flooding and widespread power outages.
Ophelia was expected to gradually weaken as it moved north to northeast.
However, heavy rains still threatened to cause flooding across a vast area from the Mid-Atlantic to southern New England, the National Hurricane Center (NOAA) said in its latest advisory on the storm.
Between 2.5 and 7 centimeters of rain could hit areas affected by Ophelia. Forecasters warned that waves and rip currents would affect much of the East Coast through the weekend.
In New Jersey, thousands of people were without power on Sunday morning and some locations received at least 10 centimeters of rain, local media reported.
