Who was Glafkos Clerides?

Glafkos Clerides was born in Nicosia on April 24, 1919 and was the eldest son of the eminent lawyer Giannis Clerides.

During the Parliamentary elections of 1981, 1985 and 1991, he was elected Member of Parliament for Nicosia, head of the Democratic Alarm Association. In the House of Representatives, as President of the party, he led the parliamentary group of the Democratic Alarm, until his election as President of the Republic of Cyprus on February 14, 1993.

After his election as President of the Republic of Cyprus, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Savior by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantinos Karamanlis.

Glafkos Clerides was last re-elected President of the Republic of Cyprus on 15 February 1998.

He has published the book “My Deposit” in four volumes, as well as the book “Documents of an Era 1993 – 2003”.

He was characterized by the so-called “real politic” and political insight in his strategic policy choices.
