Cyprus: A gynecologist left gauze on a patient’s vagina after surgery

Gauze in the vagina of a patient forgot one gynecologist in Cyprus, subjecting her since then to a Golgotha, as the woman underwent 5 surgeries. As it turned out, the doctor failed to make sure that there was gauze left over from the one he used inside the patient’s vagina or peritoneal cavity during the hysterectomy to remove the uterus, before completing the surgery.

In fact, the Limassol Court ruled, as reported by sigmalive.com, that the gauze used during the surgery was not measured, because the doctor kicked the bucket in which he threw the used gauze, telling the Nurses “I do not count gauze in my surgeries.”

The incident resulted in the patient visiting another doctor who ruled that he had a septic picture and after being admitted urgently to a clinic, he underwent surgery and the gauze was removed. In total, the patient underwent 5 surgeries and remained in the intensive care unit for 21 days.

Evaluating the testimony of the Defendant doctor, the Court ruled that he was negligent and failed to properly assess the condition of the patient who, after the operation, suffered from acute abdominal peritonitis and sepsis and instead erroneously assessed it as “mild or mild”.

The Limassol Court sentenced the Gynecologist to total compensation € 232,225.00, plus Legal interest from 31/10/2012, now Lawyer costs of the Plaintiff, for bodily injuries and damages caused to the Plaintiff.
