The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, is scheduled to meet with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, next week.

As stated in a written statement by the director of the press office of President Anastasiades, during their meeting, which will take place on Friday September 9 at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia, Mr. Anastasiades is expected to inform the President of the European Parliament of the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, Turkey’s provocative actions both on the ground and in the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus, the unacceptable positions put forward by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots, but also about his proposals, which aim to break the deadlock and to give impetus to the effort to resolve the Cyprus problem.

Last July Ms. Metsola, in a letter to President Anastasiades, reiterated the European Parliament’s condemnation of Turkey’s ongoing violations of Security Council resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992) regarding Famagusta. The President of the European Parliament, as she stated in her letter, shares the opinion of Mr. Anastasiades that the Turkish provocations in the closed city of Varosia are undermining the efforts to build trust, as well as the prospects of resuming the talks aimed at solving the Cyprus problem.

The President of the European Parliament also approves the proposals of President Anastasiades for Confidence Building Measures and agrees that these, in addition to the benefits for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, could prepare the ground for achieving a solution to the Cyprus issue, based on the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the principles and values on which the European Union is based.
