Today, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, N. Anastasiadis, had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez.
The meeting took place at 12.30 pm (Cyprus time) at the Prime Minister’s Palace Mocnloa, Madrid.
Issues related to the European agenda, developments in the Cyprus issue and Turkish challenges in the maritime zones and on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, migration, efforts to address the coronavirus pandemic, regional developments were discussed during the meeting. Southern Neighborhood policy and Western Balkans issues.
Following the meeting, a joint statement was issued by the two governments regarding the meeting, which states:
The Prime Minister of Spain, Mr. Pedro Sanchez, and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis, met on December 9 at the Palace of Moncloa, as part of the latter’s visit to Madrid at the invitation of His Majesty King Philip.
During the meeting, the two leaders reiterated the excellent relations between Spain and Cyprus and discussed global challenges and important issues on the European agenda. The two leaders also exchanged views on the COVID-19 pandemic and stressed the importance of exchanging knowledge, know-how, best practices and technology. They also reaffirmed their commitment to the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund to boost their two countries’ economies and recover from the effects of COVID-19. They also agreed on tackling migration, and in the light of the Mediterranean countries of first entry, stressed the importance of adopting a new Asylum and Migration Pact that would allow the EU to respond quickly and guarantee effective management of migration flows, based on shared responsibility and effective solidarity.
In addition, the two leaders expressed their great satisfaction with the signing, on this occasion, of three Memoranda of Understanding, in the field of Health, political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and cooperation between the Spanish Diplomatic School and the Cyprus Diplomatic Academy. They also expressed their strong will to strengthen and deepen relations in trade, innovation, tourism, culture and education.
The leaders reiterated that a peaceful, stable, secure and prosperous Mediterranean is a strategic priority for the EU and expressed their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the two countries. They also stressed the importance of respecting the sovereign rights of each state in its maritime zones in accordance with international law, including the law of the sea.
Finally, they reaffirmed their strong support for a comprehensive and sustainable settlement of the Cyprus problem, on the basis of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality, as set out in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and in line with the acquis, EU principles and values. They also stressed that, as far as Varos is concerned, all UN Security Council resolutions and declarations, as well as the relevant decisions of the European Council, must be respected and implemented in order, inter alia, to create a in turn will contribute to a comprehensive and sustainable political settlement. This will not only benefit the people of Cyprus, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, but will make a significant contribution to peace and stability in the wider region.
Meeting of Anastasiadis with the King of Spain
The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, met today with the King of Spain, Filippo STI, at the Palace in Madrid.
During the meeting, which was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Nikos Christodoulidis and the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Spain Mrs. Elena Mina, the President of the Republic and the King of Spain discussed, among other issues, issues related to efforts to address the pandemic. the response to Climate Change, the Immigration, while briefing King Philip VI on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.
Afterwards, President Anastasiadis attended a private dinner with the King of Spain.
The Cypriot Foreign Minister visited the headquarters of the International Oil Council
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis, who accompanies the President of the Republic of Cyprus N. Anastasiadis to Spain, went to the headquarters of the International Oil Council (IOC) in Madrid today, at the invitation of the Executive Director of the International Olive Council Mr. Abdellatif Ghedira.
The D.S.E. was founded in 1959 as a consequence of the International Agreement on Olive Oil in 1956. Cyprus joined as a full member of the D.S.E. on November 5, 1992, while from May 1, 2004, the date on which Cyprus joined the European Union, is represented in the meetings and procedures of the D.S.E. through the European Union which votes and gives its opinion on all its Member States.
Objectives of the D.S.E. These include, inter alia, sustainable development, the collection and dissemination of information on the economy of the olive sector, the improvement of knowledge about the benefits of olive products and the rapprochement of consuming countries.
The courtyard of the Council’s headquarters in Madrid is adorned with a collection of olive trees from various member states of the Organization, from which the Cypriot olive tree was absent. During his visit there, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in a special ceremony, officially handed over an olive tree of the Cypriot variety (Ladoelia), which was located in a nursery of the organization and will be planted in the courtyard of the Council.
Upon his arrival at the Council headquarters, Mr. Christodoulidis was received by the Executive Director of the International Olive Council.
Delivering the Cypriot olive, Mr. Christodoulidis said, among other things, that the emblematic olive tree is a connecting link for all Mediterranean countries and that the tradition of olive oil production in Cyprus continues to be, to this day, crucial. He also said that the Cypriot variety that has been cultivated in Cyprus for centuries is inextricably linked to the tradition, daily life and prosperity of the Cypriot people.
