So, at a time when Nicosia believes that the word in the July resolution on UNFICP, in relation to Varosi, should be strengthened, the first positions of London are that the issue should not be opened. What is interesting, however, is the argument put forward by the Foreign Office in its attempt to largely cover up Turkey’s expansionist actions, which violate International Organization resolutions. The British, according to reliable information, claim that if the issue of Famagusta is opened, then the Russians will advance the Turkish positions, due to the position of the Republic of Cyprus on the issue of Ukraine. In other words, the Russians will respond, based on the British narrative, to Nicosia’s decision to adopt European sanctions against Moscow, causing damage to the Cyprus issue.

This narrative, according to the same information, was tried by London to “sell” it to Nicosia, indicating that in the discussions on UNFICYP, the Russian side will be opposite this time. In fact, the “information” was transferred to a high level at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In light of the fact that this was widely circulated in diplomatic circles, it led – it is estimated – the representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, to state in a twitter post that “we continue to support the settlement of the Cyprus issue on the basis of Security Council resolutions.” “United Nations, including the creation of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with a common international legal status, sovereignty and citizenship.”

London’s goals are clear: They want a “smooth” renewal of UNFICYP’s term of office with repeated references to the content of the text. And to achieve this, according to their own approach, is not to highlight the illegal actions of the occupying power in Famagusta.

Regarding the report of the UN Secretary General for UNFICYP, it is expected that the new actions of the occupying Turkey in the enclosed area of ​​Famagusta will be recorded. This, at least, was mentioned by the UN Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, who during his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giannakis Kasoulidis, limited himself to saying that they are monitoring the whole issue and will be recorded, meaning the report.

In the meantime, the Turks have cleared the beach in front of the “King George” hotel, reaching as far as the populated area of ​​Famagusta, preparing it for use in the area. Despite the fact that this action was reported immediately, they nevertheless continued the work and at this stage it seems that they have been completed. There is, of course, much more to be done to open the enclosed area. The whole behavior of the occupying Turkey is connected with the fact that it proceeds undisturbed in the implementation of its plans. It has no cost and its actions are passively treated by international players. In the case of Famagusta, especially in relation to the last action, no reactions were recorded except for the typical and repeated ones. As for the United Nations, they tried to downplay the Turkish actions and in fact in a way that should normally provoke a strong reaction from Nicosia. The latter is limited to fighting for “enhanced words” in the resolutions of the International Organization and to confront the British methods, which offer protection and cover in the occupied Turkey.

The letter, the MOE and the “golden section”

President Anastasiadis’s letter to the occupying leader, Ersin Tatar, showed once again that Nicosia is repeating itself by maintaining the Confidence Building Measures, knowing the result in advance. That is, they will be rejected by the Turkish side. This is a move that confirms a deadlock in the Cyprus issue, as it only succeeds in maintaining the deadlock. Furthermore, it is obvious that the Turkish side, which is only discussing whether its demands for “sovereign equality” and “equal international status” will be accepted, will proceed with the submission of its own MOE. The content of the protocol on economic and fiscal cooperation between Turkey and the occupied territories for 2022 is determined by the expansionist strategy of the occupying power. It is obvious that Ankara is proceeding with the implementation of concrete measures in a choice that gradually leads to the de facto annexation of the occupied territories. In addition to the changes in the structures of the pseudo-state, in order to harmonize with the Turkish state, the further restrictions on democratic and other freedoms, the dependence of the occupiers from Ankara is strengthened.
