The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, met today at the Presidential Palace with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus and Head of the Peacekeeping Force, Colin Stewart. The meeting was held in view of the preparation of the semi-annual reports of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, which will be made public next July.
According to government spokesman Mario Pelekano, during the meeting, President Anastasiadis developed the firm positions of the Greek Cypriot side and expressed regret at the rejection of his proposals for the adoption of bold confidence-building measures that would create the necessary of negotiations.
Mr. Pelekanos stated that the Cypriot President also stressed his strong concern over the new accomplishments that Turkey is seeking, but also the unacceptable rhetoric developed by the Turkish government and those who represent it in the Turkish Cypriot community.
Mr. Stewart told reporters that his visit to the President takes place before his move to New York on the issue of renewing UNFICYP’s term.
He added that they had a very good meeting during which he thanked him for the support of the Greek Cypriots to the Turkish Cypriots during the devastating fires in the occupied territories a few days ago.
He also noted that this assistance demonstrates the key point for Cyprus regarding the solidarity of the Cypriots between them, when at the given moment there was direct and unquestionable assistance from the Greek Cypriots to the Turkish Cypriots.
He added that during their meeting they discussed the need to build trust among the people as a foundation for finding a way for the political process to resolve the Cyprus issue to proceed.
He pointed out that they also discussed that the issue of trust has taken the wrong direction and without trust it will be very difficult for the process to proceed.
Asked whether the issue of Turkish provocations in Varosia would be included in the UN Secretary-General’s report, Stuart said in the affirmative, noting that all developments on the ground were recorded in detail in the Secretary-General’s reports, adding that the UN response was up to the Council.
