Cyprus opposes the ban on issuing visas to Russians

Cyprus is expected to oppose the proposal to ban the issuance of visas to Russian citizens at the upcoming informal council of EU Foreign Ministers in Prague on August 30 and 31. The General Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cornelios Corniliou, predicted the position that Cyprus is expected to take, who estimated that the same position is expected to be taken by both Germany and Greece.

Justifying the attitude of Cyprus, Mr. Korniliou noted that the free movement of persons applies in the EU and it is “against our own principles that you universally prohibit citizens of the Russian Federation from visiting EU member states”. The Director General of the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs paid particular attention to the large Russian community that exists in Cyprus, noting that a possible decision to ban the issuance of visas to Russian citizens “would prevent the contacts of these Russians with their families”. Cyprus stressed that it considers that such a decision would not have any benefit.

The sanctions hurt Cyprus

It is noted that Cyprus had already expressed its displeasure in view of the sixth package of sanctions against Russia with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades himself, referring to sanctions that serve the interests of some countries.

Indicative of Nicosia’s displeasure is the statement made months ago by Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulidis, who, after emphasizing that Nicosia is trying to avoid sanctions affecting the Cypriot economy, noted that measures and sanctions cannot be imposed by the European Union, the which affect its member states more than they affect Russia.
