Cyprus: The Prime Minister of Luxembourg is in Nicosia today

The Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bethel is paying an official visit to Cyprus today.

According to a written statement, A. Joseph, Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic of Cyprus N. Anastasiadis, the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister of Luxembourg will discuss the latest developments regarding the war in Ukraine and the ongoing efforts to end hostilities, as well as a number of European issues such as, among others, the European Union ‘s energy independence and migration. The meeting will also discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between small states at European level.

Mr. Joseph notes that Cyprus and Luxembourg maintain excellent bilateral relations and during the meeting of Messrs. Anastasiadis and Betel are expected to exchange views in order to find ways to further deepen them.

Furthermore, according to Mr. Joseph, President Anastasiadis will brief the Prime Minister of Luxembourg on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, the readiness of the Greek Cypriot side to resume the dialogue and the initiative he has taken to implement the Confidence Building Measures he has proposed. It will emphasize the need for the EU to play a more substantial role in the efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, while stressing the need for Turkey to adopt a constructive stance with the Greek Cypriot side to resume the negotiation process, avoiding the violation of sovereign sea, but also terminating what he is doing in the enclosed area of ​​Famagusta, in violation of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

Finally, President Anastasiadis will reiterate that the Republic of Cyprus remains committed to United Nations Security Council resolutions, international law and the European acquis.

The PD’s meeting with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg is scheduled for 09:45 at the Presidential Palace. Extended conversations and statements to the media will follow.

At 12 noon, Mr. Anastasiadis will host a dinner in honor of Mr. Betel at the Presidential Palace.
