Annita Dimitriou, 37, is the new president of the largest party in Cyprus, DISY (Democratic Alarm). The official results are expected to be announced shortly. However, information from the party’s headquarters indicates that he prevailed over MP Dimitris Dimitriou and succeeds Averof Neophytou in the leadership of the party founded by Glaukos Cleridis in 1976.
The participation in the internal party elections reached 41%. 20,708 members exercised their right to vote in the Extraordinary All-Cypriot Electoral Assembly for the nomination of the new President of the Democratic Alarm.
The former President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis also voted in today’s election process. The new President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, although he comes from DISY and declares himself a member of the party, did not take part in the elections as he has not clarified whether he has been removed due to his decision to contest the presidential elections as an independent with the support of Center parties.
