“The Republic of Cyprus has moved earth and heaven internationally and Turkey will not achieve its pseudo-state goals» emphasized on Thursday (17/11) the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus Ioannis Kasoulidis.
In his statements to journalists after the meeting of the President of the Republic of Cyprus with the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, Miroslav Yetzia, at the Presidential Palace, in which he took part, Ioannis Kasoulidis he said that Mr. Yetzia “is visiting Cyprus on behalf of the secretary general with the aim of ascertaining where the situation is regarding the mission of good offices of the CG for the solution of the Cyprus issue.
Do you realize the climate we live in here at Cyprus at the moment with repeated occupation challenges, buffer zone challenges, challenges to achieve recognition in the Organization of Turkic-Speaking States or elsewhere and their demand to enter into a SOFA agreement as a separate entity.
They will succeed in none, I say. And they did not succeed, despite the Turkish propaganda. The Cyprus press has to choose who to believe, us or the Turkish propaganda?”
Asked what moves the Republic of Cyprus has made, the Foreign Minister said that “we moved heaven and earth. I don’t want to expose, other states, let them say it themselves. But also for the Turkish-speaking countries and for the SOFA process from the Security Council’s point of view and for the opening of offices, we have moved heaven and earth. I include my own telephone communications, I do include interventions from our partners in the EU and at ministerial level, but also from the foreign service, which you have seen from their statements and from the US and from China, and we have cross-referenced that they have move”.
Asked to say whether the illegal actions of the regime in the dead zone and the attitude of the special representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus Colin Stewart were discussed in today’s meeting, Mr. Kasoulidis said that “today we did not talk about the attitude of Mr. Stewart. The challenges in the buffer zone have been listed by the President.”
When asked if, based on today’s data, he does not think there will be any visit by a United Nations official before the elections, the minister said that “if there is no mobility and the situation continues as it is today, probably not. But I hope and wish that the messages will go about the need, at least, not to make this situation worse between now and the elections. You understand that when you are in an election period and such a degree of dissatisfaction is created in the Cypriot public opinion, the candidates, without exception, are obliged to make commitments from which whoever is elected will be difficult to go back on later”.
Asked if he will hold a meeting with Mr. Colin Stewart, he replied, as reported by the Athens News Agency, “yes, I will hold it in due course. Now let him see the people in charge of the Cyprus Directorate, let him see the general director and then me.”
When asked if he is worried about any negative developments until the elections, the minister replied “of course. You remember I spoke publicly about the dangers for Famagusta. I spoke publicly about the risks of interventions in the EEZ of Cyprus with drilling by Turkey. I didn’t do it to scare the Cypriots. I did it so that we could mobilize proactively. If they do it after that, what does it matter now? And indeed at this moment we do not foresee any actions in the short term. Maybe we’ll see later.”
