Czech President Milos Zeman is in hospital

Its president Czech RepublicMilos Zeman was taken to the Central Military Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said shortly after meeting with outgoing Prime Minister and his ally, the populist populist Babis, who hopes to remain in power despite the ruling came second in the parliamentary elections conducted.

Journalists saw an ambulance walk away from the presidential palace in Lani, west of Prague, shortly after the two men met.

The hospital representative did not give more details but said that the director of the hospital will give a press conference at 15:00 Greek time.

The president’s office said Zeman, 77, was ill and had been in hospital for eight days last month.

The pro-Russian Czech president had started his meeting with Babis this morning, but a little later it was announced that he needed to be transported to the hospital urgently.

Today the two politicians would have informal talks and their official meeting was scheduled for Wednesday.

Under the constitution, the president can nominate a person of his choice as prime minister and order the formation of a government.

Subsequently, the new government must receive a vote of confidence from the lower house within one month of its appointment.

In the Czech Republic, the president is in charge of talks with party leaders for a viable majority.

Zeman had said before the election that he would nominate the party leader who would receive the most votes in the election – rather than the leader of an alliance – to try to form a government.

This would be Babis as the ANO won the most votes of all the parties.

Zeman, however, did not comment on what his next steps would be after the election results.

According to the Constitution, the presidential powers for the appointment of the prime minister pass to the speaker of the lower house if the position of the president is vacant.

The offices of Babis and Zeman did not comment on the meeting.

A spokesman for the president, Giri Ovcacek, confirmed that Zeman had been taken to hospital without comment.

“Based on the recommendation of his treating doctor, Professor Miroslav Zavoral, Milos Zeman agreed to be treated at the Central Military Hospital in Prague,” the spokesman wrote on Twitter.
