The stormy winds and the snow storms in Czech republic resulted in thousands of households being left without electricity today, while the main highway connecting the country to the neighboring Slovakia.
In the Žilina region of Slovakia, authorities called on residents to stay at home and avoid non-essential travel, especially to the north. Winds blow at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour in the Tatra mountains.
A section of the D1 highway near the Tatra Mountains, the Athens News Agency reports, was closed for several hours after about 30 cars were involved in a traffic accident due to the heavy snowstorm, local media reported.
In the Czech Republic, 15,000 households still remain without electricity (up from about 90,000 in the morning) after winds downed trees and power lines.
The CTK agency also reported that dozens of train routes were cancelled.
