The Czech government today declared a 30-day state of emergency, closing Christmas markets and nightclubs in a bid to stem the Covid-19 pandemic.
The country recorded 18,004 new infections on Wednesday, following a record 25,877 new cases on Tuesday.
Hospitals on the east side of the country are close to saturation, and some have already begun transporting patients to other regions.
“The situation will worsen in the coming weeks, with a peak expected near Christmas,” Health Minister Adam Wojciech told reporters.
But the Czech government has adopted less radical measures than its neighbors, Austria and Slovakia.
Wojciech said restaurants, discos and casinos would be closed from 10pm to 5am from tomorrow, Friday night, and Christmas shopping and drinking in public would be banned.
The government has also reduced the number of people who can attend celebrations to 100. A maximum of 1,000 people can attend the sports and cultural events.
Restrictions from Monday already bar non-vaccinated Czechs and those who have not recently recovered from the disease from entering restaurants, cafes and sports venues.
The country has recorded more than two million confirmed Covid cases and more than 32,500 deaths.
