Students and teachers commemorated her 14 victims today worst mass armed attack in Czech republicas they formed a human chain to “embrace”, symbolically, the university building, where the gunman opened fire just before Christmas.

The crowd marched from Charles University headquarters through Prague's Old Town Square to the Faculty of Fine Arts building, where a 24-year-old history student was shot dead on December 21 before killing himself when police surrounded him.

Then, more than 1,000 people stood, silently holding each other's handwhile bells rang in the city's temples for 14 minutesas a tribute to each victim.

Thousands of candles have been placed on the steps of the school building, which will remain closed until the end of January.

“Hate Won't Win”

“I feel relief from the words of students, who say how hate will not win. We will live and continue the lessons”said the rector of the university, Milena Kralikova, addressing the people, ahead of the march.

“Our academic community was hit, but it remained intact. Her steps through Prague today to the School of Fine Arts will also symbolize our path to recovery.”

Kralikova and the president of the School of Fine Arts led the march and helped carry a kerosene lamp which was lit by candles in the university headquarters and which will in turn light a memorial flame outside the School building, which will burn for a month.

The attack, as reported by APE-MPE, sparked discussions among university, student, police and political leaders about the changes needed in security measures.

But they initially agreed to continue allowing people to enter university buildings without going through metal detectors.
