Czech President Milos Zeman today gave the “green light” to about 100 Czech citizens to help the Ukrainian army fight Russian forces in Ukraine, his spokesman said.
The once pro-Russian Czech president changed his mind after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24. A few days later, he called his longtime ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin, “crazy.”
“Today (Wednesday) Zeman signed, at their own request, a decision approving the enlistment of 103 civilians in the Ukrainian armed forces,” said presidential spokesman Giri Ovchanek.
Since the beginning of the war and after the appeal made by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, many foreign volunteers of different nationalities have been fighting on the side of the Ukrainians.
Zeman’s decision was also approved by Prime Minister Petr Fiala. The two politicians had agreed in March not to punish Czechs leaving to fight in Ukraine. Czech law prohibits the country’s citizens from fighting abroad.
The Fiala government has provided about 118 million euros in military aid to Ukraine.
