Czech Republic: President Zeman is incapable of performing his duties

Its president Czech Republic Milos Zeman is currently unable to carry out his duties, the Speaker of the Upper House announced, citing the petition he requested from the hospital where he has been hospitalized for a week, in the intensive care unit, the head of state.

Senate Speaker Milos Vistril told reporters that according to the report Zeman is very unlikely to be able to return to his duties in the coming weeks, notes APE – BPE.

Wistrill added that parliament should now discuss whether to activate the article of the constitution which transfers the duties of president to other officials. Among those duties is the appointment of a new prime minister following the October 8-9 parliamentary elections.

In order to do this, both houses of parliament must agree. The lower house of parliament will be formed on November 8.

Zeman was taken to hospital a day after the election, in which his ally, outgoing Prime Minister Andrei Babis, was defeated by opposition coalitions. The president’s office has ignored calls to release Zeman’s diagnosis and health details, arguing that his treatment does not prevent him from performing his duties.

For this reason, Vistril asked for the opinion of the hospital, without revealing the doctors’ diagnosis.

“In the view of the Central Military Hospital, President Milos Zeman is currently unable, for health reasons, to continue in office,” he said.
