The Czech Republic will receive 15 Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany, as part of an agreement under which it will donate its own Soviet-made tanks to Ukraine, the two countries’ defense ministries announced.
According to Berlin, Germany will finance the transaction and train Czech soldiers in the use of tanks.
The Czechs will also begin talks with Germany on the purchase of another 50, more modern Leopard 2A7 tanks in the coming years.
The chariots donated by Germany are expected to be delivered within the year.
“Germany has been our main economic partner for a long time. But not in the defense sector, and we want to change that, not only in chariots, but in our bilateral cooperation in general,” said Defense Minister Yana Chernotsova.
The Czech Republic currently has 30 modernized T-72M4CZ tanks and dozens more that have not been modernized and are not in use. It has already sent some of its oldest tanks to Ukraine since the February 24 invasion of Russia, as well as heavy weapons such as anti-aircraft guns, rocket launchers, firearms and vehicles.
