Czech’s move to Russian ambassador to Prague over use of diplomatic property

The Czech Foreign Ministry today summoned the Russian ambassador to express his concerns about the use of Russian diplomatic property.

The Czech Republic expelled about 100 Russian diplomats last year as part of a diplomatic row over Prague allegations of Russian involvement in an ammunition depot explosion in 2014, and the Prague government has taken a hard line against its invasion of Ukraine.

“Diplomatic missions in the territory of a foreign state must respect not only the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, but also the rule of law of the host country,” Foreign Minister Jan Lipowski said in a statement.

“Russia does not do this and does not respect the rule of law,” the ministry said in a statement, without elaborating.

The Russian embassy in Prague declined to immediately respond to a request for comment.

The CTK news agency reported that a newly set up task force to deal with Russian-owned properties had identified dozens of those suspected of not yet being used for diplomatic purposes. However, he did not give more details to the public.

Earlier in the year, the Prague region where the Russian embassy is located requested a Russian school complex, which has not been used since the Czech Republic deported Russian diplomats last year, to be allocated for refugee children from Ukraine.

It is not clear, however, whether this building is one of those of concern.
