Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba today lamented that the publication of a German media outlet about German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s visit had caused a “difficult situation”, expressing confidence that it would be resolved through the two sides.
Kuleba made the remarks during a joint press conference with his Irish counterpart Simon Coveni in Kyiv, the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reports.
Kuleba stressed that in diplomacy there are many moments of work, which concern the understanding of the patterns of visits and their expected results. According to him, when diplomats undertake this work themselves, they always find mutually acceptable solutions. But when aspects of working contacts fall into the media, then there are public debates, scandals and emotional turmoil, which hinder cooperation and create a negative field.
“This is exactly the situation we have at the moment with Germany. I am saddened that the report of one of the German media, citing a source, has caused a difficult situation, which we are in at the moment.”
In this context, Kuleba said that Ukraine treats Germany with great respect.
“We do not always agree with German policy, but we respect Germany as a state and as a partner and it is obvious to us that the head of state, President of the Federal Republic of Germany is one of the symbols of this state. We with the same respect “We are facing the institution of the Federal President,” said the Ukrainian Foreign Minister.
Kuleba stressed that Ukraine does not want the escalation and intensification of bilateral relations with Germany.
“That is why I am convinced that this situation will be resolved through diplomacy and that there will be no damage to Ukrainian-German relations. I emphasize once again that we are in favor of relations built on mutual respect and we will “I am directly in favor of creating a new German policy towards Ukraine in the current circumstances. And we expect such a new German policy from the new German government,” said the head of Ukrainian diplomacy.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had said on April 12 that Ukraine had rejected his visit, which he wanted to hold with the presidents of the Baltic states and Poland.
Earlier, Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Andrei Melnik, made it clear that Ukraine was rather awaiting Chancellor Olaf Solz’s visit, as Steinmeier’s visit would be “only symbolic”. Melnik had repeatedly criticized Steinmeier for being too pro-Russian. Last week, however, the German president acknowledged the mistakes he had made in his policy toward Russia, saying it was necessary to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to justice.
Some German politicians and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck have criticized Ukraine for its reluctance to accept Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
On April 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that neither he nor his office had received a formal request for German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to pay a visit to Ukraine.
