D. Manzos: Telephone monitoring and wiretapping are not normal

PASOK-Movement for Change press representative Dimitris Manzos described the establishment of the Institutions and Transparency Committee as a necessary step, which “is just the kick-off in this great struggle ahead of us for the revelation of the truth”, speaking to radio station Real FM for the attempt to monitor the president of the party Nikos Androulakis. “We didn’t get any wiser, we didn’t expect it anyway. But the mood we got from a closed-door meeting is that the government probably wanted to close the case in a fast-track process. That’s not going to happen here. We won’t stop if We haven’t received answers to all our questions,” he added.

He expressed his and the Movement’s confidence in the Greek Justice, while pointing out that “we will not stand idly by at the legal level either. We will constantly bring new, supplementary, strengthening evidence to the charge, if it arises”, reminding at the same time that “except from the Androulakis case, there is the Koukaki case or other possible follow-up cases which, even if they are not directly connected, can reinforce each other”.

Asked about the position of Haris Kastanidis regarding the amendment on the monitoring of the EYP (the parliamentary representative of PASOK-KINAL had stated in the Parliament “newer data and the complaints of the KKE lead us to the decision to recommend the repeal of the relevant provision”) , Mr. Manzos stated that “it reflects a more general attitude of concern of the Parliamentary Group and the Movement towards this amendment”, while citing his duties as director of the KO during the given time period, he clarified: “An amendment appeared from the Ministry of Justice suddenly, in an unrelated bill of the Ministry of Health, without special justification. The general invocation of the national interest often leads to illusory results. After a few days, after it became known to the legal community exactly what was passed, the Privacy Authority itself came of Communications and deemed the amendment unconstitutional”. “We would like to see changes in our criminal legislation, with the abolition of this unconstitutional regulation”, Mr. Manzos emphasized.

Finally, commenting on the attitude of government officials in the Androulakis case, the press representative of PASOK-Movement for Change underlined that “monitoring, wiretapping, eavesdropping and wiretapping are not normal. Some ND MPs or government people all this they appear as something normal, expected, normal. They say “what is Androulakis and PASOK shouting? Nothing happened”. It is not only a matter of Nikos Androulakis and a political party. It is a matter of every citizen, it is a matter of our democracy, it is a matter of transparency and it concerns all of us”.

“The rule of law and human rights are not a la carte,” concluded Mr. Manzos.
