The international conference of the “ESTIA” Center was attended on Friday, November 19, by the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Domna Michailidou. The theme of the conference was “10 Years SYD- 10 Years Ahead”.
In her greeting, Domna Michailidou thanked the president and the Board of Directors of “ESTIA”, for the holistic care it provides for life to young and old with mental retardation.
He stressed the common vision that exists to combat prejudice and social anguish, which stigmatizes people with disabilities and their families by forcing them to stay on the sidelines.
He referred to the important steps taken for the deinstitutionalization of people with disabilities, to the establishment and operation of Supported Living Shelters which help in the socialization of the beneficiaries, as well as to the institutionalization of the Personal Assistant.
As the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs stated: “The lifting of social exclusion, the elimination of discrimination, respect for the rights and social inclusion of people with disabilities, are goals that need the contribution of all of us to achieve. It is not just a matter “Political will, legislative framework, or resources, although these are necessary prerequisites. In addition, the active attitude of the citizens themselves is needed. Through our individual and collective example we are more likely to achieve that physical disability is not a social disability.” .
