D. Michailidou: More measures against abuse

The Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Domna Michailidou, referred today to the Parliament to the tightening of the measures for the prevention and protection of children, the elderly and people with disabilities from abuse, during the discussion of the bill “Jobs again” in the Standing Committee on Social Affairs. .

“We have not made any revolution. The necessity of these strict regulations is more than reasonable. As a State we have taken some self-evident but necessary steps,” the minister said.

According to Domna Michailidou, the new stricter regulations focus on two axes:

1. The extension of the measure of Protection Officer (who has the responsibility to collect and transfer all abuse information to the competent authorities) from the child protection structures and the protection structures for the disabled and the elderly and at the same time the extension of the offenses which prohibit those who have been persecuted for them, to offer services in all the above structures. In particular, criminal offenses relating to crimes against life, risk to life, physical integrity and personal liberty, such as the abduction of minors, as well as the crimes of forming or participating in a criminal organization, the commission of terrorist acts and the their criminal support. Especially for adult accommodation structures, the offenses of on-demand homicide and incitement or aiding and abetting suicide are also added.

2. The sanctions imposed by any delinquent operation of social structures are tightened. Until now, if a social structure was operating without a license, there was no automatic sanction for it. A sanction existed only if there was a shutdown decision which the operator did not comply with. Now, a body that operates without a license is automatically punished with a fine of 60,000 euros and in case of non-compliance for its closure is punished with imprisonment.

Finally, the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Domna Michailidou, stated that: “No tolerance for any form of abuse. We are making substantial changes and building relationships of trust in society. “We have institutionally strengthened the control mechanisms. We are protecting all our fellow citizens, especially the most vulnerable, so that they can live in a safe environment.”
