D. Papadimoulis: Gentiloni proposal for escape clause will be approved by Eurogroup and Ecofin

The emergence of a cooperation government after the next national elections is proposed by the SYRIZA MEP, Dimitris Papadimoulis, with the aim of addressing the economic front, which is deteriorating, as he points out. However, he ruled out the possibility of SYRIZA cooperating with ND.

Specifically, answering questions from members of the press, on the sidelines of the plenary session of the European Parliament, the SYRIZA MEP (Left) stated that “on the proposal of the responsible Community Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, Greece will be excluded, along with Italy from the extension of the escape clause in 2023. As you know, Gentiloni announced the extension for ’23 with the exception of Greece and Italy, which means that the budget will be drawn up in September based on the spending cut. “It will be determined from September, but it is certain that there will be,” said Mr. Papadimoulis.

“So the budget,” he added, “will return to primary surpluses.” It is not a good mandate and increases the chances of elections in the fall. What is proposed, however, concerns the primary surpluses by 2060, which will not be 2.2%, as agreed with the Tsipras government, but 2.6%, which are more unbearable. There is, however, the parameter of interest rates, ie the cost of government borrowing – the spreads of Greek bonds have already risen and are rising. All this is not auspicious things for the economy, given the prolongation of the war in Ukraine.

Asked by reporters about the fate of the Gentiloni proposal, Mr. Papadimoulis was adamant: “It is certain that the Gentiloni proposal will be approved. The Eurogroup and Ecofin. There are some in Greece who say they will fight it but I say “I say this because we have no room as a country to refuse to modernize our way of governing.”

Mr. Papadimoulis pointed out that “most countries in Europe have co-operative governments. Greece was bankrupted by one-party governments. So there must be a co-operative government.”

As he clarified, “the first party (in the elections) should form a government of cooperation with another party”. He hastened to add that “if ND is in government we will be in opposition and if we are government, ND will be in opposition”, ruling out the possibility of cooperation between the two parties.
