The daily Covid-19 infection rate in Australia rose from 100,000 for the first time this Saturday (8) amid an outbreak of the Ômicron variant.
The Oceanian country registered 116,025 new cases, breaking the previous day’s record of just over 78,000.
Almost all of the new cases were registered in the most populous states of New South Wales, where Sydney is located, and Victoria, where Melbourne is located, which hosts the next Australian Open, which starts on the 17th.
Health Minister Martin Foley said affected regions face “a huge impact” on the health care system because of the increase in Covid cases and “significant challenges at this time.”
The state of Victoria saw its caseload nearly double in 24 hours, reaching 51,356. The number of cases includes the results of rapid antigen tests performed up to a week earlier and which could only be registered after being presented from Friday (7).
“What we now know is that the numbers for cases in the general community are more accurate,” Foley said. “Having this realistic number allows us to put more people in contact with the service they need,” he added.
