Former US President Donald Trump will have to pay a fine of $10,000 a day starting Tuesday until he complies with a subpoena from the New York Attorney General, who is investigating his business practices. , said a NY state judge.
Judge Arthur Engoron on Monday charged Trump with civil contempt for “repeatedly failing” to deliver materials to Attorney General Letitia James, whose office has been investigating for three years whether the former president’s family firm improperly evaluated assets to obtain financial benefits.
In Tuesday’s ruling, Engoron wrote that James’ office “has met its burden of demonstrating that Trump deliberately disobeyed a legal court order” and said the Republican must pay $10,000 a day, starting today, until he fulfill the measure of justice.
Trump denied wrongdoing and said the investigation was politically motivated.
The former president’s lawyer, Alina Habba, said on Monday that he will appeal Engoron’s decision.
