Dam in BH broke due to human failure, says City Hall

The breaking of the containment dam of Lagoa do Nado, that occurred in November last year was caused by human failure, according to the city of Belo Horizonte, after opening an inquiry that found the causes of the disaster.

In a statement, the Secretariat of Works and Infrastructure reported that “based on the analysis of documents, hearing of the witnesses and other elements collected throughout the inquiry, no structural failures were identified in the dam that may have contributed to their rupture”.

“The calculated elements indicate that the incident occurred because the spillway gallery was partially obstructed by three wooden bulkheads called Stop Log.”

These devices, in turn, were removed from the spillway during the rainfall period, for relegation of the reservoir level, however, were improperly replaced, contributing to the breakup.

The works for cleaning, installation of sediment barriers and implementation of a new drainage channel in the area where the dam was broken, and should be ready in the coming months, according to the municipal executive forecast.
