Damage to Ukrainian infrastructure hurts humanitarian aid, says UK

Damage caused by Russian forces to Ukraine’s transport infrastructure is hampering the arrival of humanitarian aid to areas previously occupied by Russia, assesses the UK Ministry of Defence.

In a bulletin released on Saturday (16), British intelligence said Russian troops had exacerbated the situation in conflict areas, destroying bridges, spreading landmines and abandoning vehicles on key routes in northern Ukraine.

The destruction can be seen in Chernihiv, where only a pedestrian bridge over the Desna River remains. According to UK Defense, Russian forces are responsible for significant damage to crossings around the city, which had a population of 285,000 before the start of the war.

The conflict, which has lasted more than 50 days, has already had serious impacts on the entire Ukrainian territory. According to the World Bank’s estimate, Ukraine’s economic output is expected to contract by a staggering 45.1% this year, due to business closures and reduced exports.
