Dangerous, record-breaking heat is forecast across much of the south-central United States today and is expected to last through much of this week. In total, more than 100 million people are currently under some type of heat alert or advisory. Be sure to follow proper heat safety recommendations.
Excess heat alerts cover the San Joaquin Valley, California, parts of northern Arizona, north-central Texas, all of Oklahoma, Arkansas, northern Louisiana, parts of Mississippi and Tennessee.
In addition, there are heat advisories in New Mexico, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, parts of southern Illinois and Indiana, and in the Northeast, in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. This week, parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas could see their highest temperatures so far this year, with highs forecast to reach 102 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit (38-45C).
The heat in the US is linked to the deadly extreme weather event continuing in Europe, as the same wavy jet stream pattern (technically known as “wave number five” for its five main crests, or domes of heat , high pressure). This pattern has caused heat waves in Asia, the United States, Europe and the Middle East.
Europe is experiencing an unprecedented heat wave, surpassing record temperature highs. The south and center of the continent have experienced temperatures of up to 44ºC in Spain, 41ºC in France and 40.2ºC in the UK. Key sectors were affected and emergency services are facing dozens of wildfires and heat deaths.
The heat wave in the US comes as President Joe Biden was expected to announce a climate emergency declaration on July 20, which included new funding for communities facing extreme heat, as well as a series of actions and measures to curb emissions that cause global warming during a speech at a defunct Massachusetts coal-fired power plant.
Last week, Biden promised “strong executive action” after talks on climate legislation failed in the Senate. However, according to US media reports, later in the day, the schedule was extended, so a decision on the matter is expected in the coming weeks.
