Behind such a complex reality there are strong and determined personalities, such as the lawyer Daniela Addis, who, in addition to being a partner and councilor, carries on a legal activity in Rome, which is intertwined with the sea and has collaborated with a series of institutions, including the Senate Commission on territory and environmental assets.
Born in Sassari, she is 50 years old and has a myriad of interests that she takes care of with great dedication. Here’s what he told us.
A story that starts from the school years …
«After high school, I studied law with an international focus in Siena, graduating with a thesis focused on the establishment of an international marine park in the Strait of Bonifacio, the strait that separates my Sardinia from Corsica.
Today I bring this background to seminars and specialization and training courses on topics such as protected natural areas and, at the same time, I am an expert on the subject in international law at the University of Parma, with particular attention to the sea. It is a passion that has also guided me at an institutional level, especially during the period in which I was an expert in the Technical Secretariat for the establishment and management of Marine Protected Areas at the Ministry of the Environment. The sea, and the coasts, therefore represent the area that has most distinguished my path and that led me to found and manage a law firm, where I have been dealing, for over 20 years, with problems related to the ecosystems present in the waters ” .
A universe that has always fascinated her …
«Yes, I would define it as an empathic and decidedly positive relationship. I received an imprint in this sense from my parents, who from an early age taught me to interact directly with nature, while maintaining a deep respect. So I shaped my days and habits accordingly, from sailing to diving, from caving to cycling which is the main means of transport, even in a metropolis like the capital. In my diet I try to avoid meat and fish and I prefer zero km and seasonal foods. I prefer a loan or a rental to property and, over time, I have lived in houses in the historic center and not in newly built ones which involve further land use ».
How does the commitment with “Donne di Mare” fit into all of this?
«In full coherence with the experiences I have had so far, with the aim of spreading eco-sustainability everywhere, in synergy with Italian realities and the entire Mediterranean basin. We are partners in stimulating initiatives, dedicated for example to women entrepreneurs in the sustainable fishing sector. The ocean, in general, has been for too long, and wrongly, considered the exclusive of men. To dispel similar stereotypes, we have promoted, together with Unesco and B-Woman Italia, the “Donna di Mare for the Decade of the Sea” Award (2021-2030), aimed at women aged 18 to 30. To participate, it is necessary to present a project idea that combines science, technology, on the one hand, and design, art and culture on the other, to rethink the marine ecosystem and the relationship of the human being with it. Only together can excellence be made to grow. This is why, in addition to a symbolic prize, we have provided for the winner a mentorship path, with which, thanks to the expertise of our experts, she will be supported and guided in the realization of her idea, creating contacts, the so-called networking, which will continue to cultivate in the future ».
What would you recommend to those who would like to follow in his footsteps?
«To let oneself be carried away, with tenacity and passion, by one’s own aspirations, trying to be enchanted, intrigued and inspired by what surrounds us. An understanding that must take place not only in the light of the complex legal framework that concerns it, but also of more technical aspects that complete the knowledge, perhaps with the help of biologists, geologists, engineers. We need a real change of perspective, a revolution that puts the planet, the only one we have, in the first place, replacing a capitalist, consumerist and anthropocentric vision ».
What can be done in your opinion?
«Be inspired by the economy of balance, equality and respect for limits. A bit like the path indicated by Serge Latouche with his “happy degrowth”. There are eight billion of us on the globe, a number destined to increase in the coming years, with a consumption capacity that is significantly higher than the available resources. We must recover the values that allow us to live in harmony, enhancing and teaching the concept of beauty, closely linked to biodiversity. Only in this way can we hope to save the Earth which is dying because of us ».
