Daniela: “So I became the first black lawyer in Reggio Emilia”

Daniela Obodai on 23 November she became the first black lawyer in her city, Reggio Emilia. A goal she had promised herself to reach from an early age, after the first fights with those at school who called her a “black girl” or asked her if she remained black even after a shower. “I felt a lot of pain but I told myself that I would not respond in the same way they did. I reacted with facts, to show that, wherever we start, each of us can make his dream come true ».

The first of Daniela’s family to arrive in Italy from Ghana was her father. “It was the eighties and shortly after my mother arrived too.” Daniela was born here but at the age of eighteen, she had to send the request to obtain Italian citizenship. And all in all, she managed to get it quickly.

She continued to study, enrolled in Law, practiced as a trainee and has been a full-fledged lawyer for several weeks. “Being the first black lawyer in Reggio Emilia fills me with pride and at the same time charges me with responsibility. I think I’m lucky because two cultures coexist in me, because I am who I am today by virtue of these. My life experience has made me vulnerable but also strong and aware. It’s not easy, I admit. I believe that the stereotype is inherent in each of us and it doesn’t scare me. I have known many people who have wanted to read the facets of my being without knowledge and not without it. I am afraid of hatred and ignorance, aware that they lead to labeling people without knowing them ».

Daniela has decided to tell her story to be part of a change. “I remember the first day I walked into court and the looks of the people who wondered what I was doing there, not in the guise of assisted but on the side of those who assist. Sharing is definitely constructive, if by exposing myself I can change something why not do it? Above all because I know how heavy the inertia of those who can do something and not do it weighs ».
