Denmark announced today that closes its investigation into the 2022 pipeline explosions Nord Stream, who transported natural gas from Russia to Germany, the second country to make this decision after Sweden.
“Based on the evidence of the investigation, the authorities can conclude that the sabotage of the pipelines was intentional. At the same time, they consider that there are no necessary grounds to continue the investigation in Denmark and consequently the Copenhagen police have decided to complete the investigation into the explosions,” the police said in a statement.
The multi-billion-dollar Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines carrying Russian gas across the Baltic were damaged after explosions occurred hours apart on September 26, 2022.
The explosions occurred near the Danish island of Bornholm, but “outside Danish territorial waters,” the statement said.
Denmark, Germany and Sweden have cooperated in the investigation, which has been described as “complex and thorough”, and which also involved the Danish Intelligence Service (PET).
“PET continues to monitor the development of the threat and, in cooperation with other competent authorities, is constantly taking the measures deemed necessary to protect Denmark's critical infrastructure,” the statement underlined.
Various media investigations have blamed Ukraine, Russia or the US for the blasts, but all have denied any involvement.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly denied that his country was involved in the sabotage. “I would never do it,” he told German newspaper Bild in June, adding that “I would like to see proof.”
Earlier this month, Sweden announced it was halting its investigation into the blasts, but added that it had handed over the evidence it had gathered to German investigators, who have yet to release their findings.
