Danish prime minister resigns but hopes to form new centrist government

Danish Social Democrat Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who won Tuesday’s general election, said she had handed over her resignation to the Queen on Wednesday and would begin exploring a coalition in politics.

However, negotiations are expected to be lengthy, as Frederiksen’s friends and foes have expressed skepticism towards such a coalition, making the outcome uncertain.

The left-wing bloc, of which Frederiksen’s Social Democratic Party is a part, won 90 seats, the smallest possible majority in the 179-seat parliament, while the right-wing bloc won 72 seats and a newly formed centrist party secured 16.

Frederiksen campaigned on the need for a broad coalition across the traditional left-right divide, arguing that political unity is necessary at a time of international uncertainty.
