Giacomo, a number one father -in -law, is 94 years old and is dry and brilliant as when I met him, 35 years ago. He does not know how to cook an egg but has no pretensions except his books on the table, music and a fresh copy of the Spiegel Every morning. At the last birthday of Ludo, my firstborn, he gave him the six volumes of The Second World War by churchill.
Uncle Gianni is also almost ninety years old. He is a little more steeped, but when night he reads, indeed rereads, the classics, runs like a boy. As soon as we see each other we discuss what we are reading and Last time he gave me Dr. Semmelweisbecause I had confided to him not to lose his head for Céline and he just didn’t go down.
Among the things that lengthen life are to love what we do and read. I was lucky because as a child I lived in a misty city and our house was full of books, so I became a compulsive reader. Reading I lived in Paris and Combray, Vienna, Moscow and St. Petersburg, Malaysia and New York, everywhere. I am now more than a thousand years.
I don’t remember when I understand I need to share my addiction. Maybe in high school, with my friend Bobo. Talking about the books I read is a drug. It is a way not to travel alone, but also to give up on the characters of the booksone of the funniest activities there are.
When I started writing about books for work, I was twenty -seven years old and I felt the luckiest person in the world. I haven’t stopped anymore. I spoke about it on the radio, on TV and here with you. By now I know I can’t help sharing the discoveries, the stories, the characters I encounter when I read and confront myself and sometimes fight on the style of their authors.
It is like when you are in love and you cannot avoid talking to others, share the joy and chills, expectations, questions of love. Ah: Now I do it with my friends Silvia and Stefano even in a podcast called Talk about friends and comes out every week, on Thursday.
