In a press conference this Tuesday (20), the United States Coast Guard updated the search status for the missing submarine with five people on board. Officials estimate that there is “about 40 hours of breathable air” in the submersible – which would last approximately until early Thursday morning (22).
The vessel lost contact 1 hour and 45 minutes after diving Sunday to view the wreckage of the Titanic, the US Coast Guard said. At that point, authorities estimated he had about 96 hours of life support.
“We know there’s about 40 hours of breathable air left based on the initial report,” Captain Jason Frederick of the Coast Guard’s First District told a news conference Tuesday.
The Coast Guard is working “24 hours a day” to try to find the submersible. Frederick said it’s a “complex search” that requires specialized equipment.
He explained that the Coast Guard doesn’t have all the knowledge and equipment it needs, so it’s asking other agencies and countries, including the US Navy and Canadian Armed Forces, for help.
“The unified command brings together this knowledge and additional capability to maximize the effort in solving this very complex problem,” he said.
The search is taking place some 900 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. The Coast Guard said in a tweet that 10,000 square miles have been searched so far. Aircraft and other equipment search for the submersible on the surface and underwater.
