Daughter of actress Samara Felippo is a victim of racism at an upscale school in SP

Actress Samara Felippo denounced that her 14-year-old daughter was a victim of racism within the traditional Colégio Vera Cruz, which is located in Pinheiros, in the west zone of São Paulo. Last Monday (22), two students took a notebook belonging to the girl, who is black, destroyed some work she had done and wrote a racial slur on one of the pages. Afterwards, the notebook was returned to the school's lost and found property.

A police report was registered by the actress. A CNN contacted the Public Security Secretariat to find out if the Civil Police were investigating the case, but there has been no response yet.

According to Samara, her daughter had been the target of racism for some time. In several episodes, the girl came home crying and reported to her mother that she was excluded among her 9th grade classmates, and even named the two students who carried out the racist act in her notebook.

“She had a circle of friends and they would go out when she arrived, spread malicious gossip against her, there was even an accusation of robbery at a party, of a porter who disappeared and there were several people there and they accused her. It’s subtle, it’s cruel, it’s everyday,” said the actress. The situation reached its limit with the explicitly racist insults that were made in the notebook.

According to the actress, the girl herself reported it to the school coordination as soon as she saw the notebook. The school then opened an investigation to identify the perpetrators of the act, who only came forward after a threat to cancel a trip that would be taken by the students.

After identification, the school suspended the students for an indefinite period of time and decided that they could not participate in the trip. However, Samara demands the expulsion of the students. “It is a crime and must be treated as such. If a student was caught using drugs, if there was a rape within the school, these students would certainly be expelled, so why is this case any different?”

Samara said that she does not want harm from teenagers, but that the school needs to commit to the anti-racist education that it claims to defend. “It’s violence that happens to thousands of young black people, not just my daughter,” she said.

The actress informed that the school scheduled a parents' meeting for this Monday (29) to discuss the matter and define the measures that will be taken. Samara also hired a lawyer to monitor the case and intends to represent criminally against those responsible for the students.

A CNN contacted Colégio Vera Cruz and asked for a position on what happened, but there has still been no response.
