The daughter and grandson of a French cryptocurrency executive suffered an attempt to kidnap in Paris by armed robbers in an attack during the day and was recorded by cameras.
The case led to Paymium, a cryptocurrency company owned by the woman’s father who was the target of the attack, demanding “protections” for companies in the France’s cryptocurrency sector.
Tuesday’s attack (13) in Paris’s 11th district is the latest in a series of violent cases against France’s growing cryptocurrency industry, including two in recent months and at least five since 2023.
Four masked men attacked their daughter, partner and their son in the French capital, police sources told French news agency Agence France-PRESse (AFP).
Video images show three masked men jumping from a white van with the brand of delivery company Chronopost. The woman and her partner struggle against the aggressors and high relief shouts are heard.
Speaking to BFMTV, a witness said the attackers tried to “force a young woman forcibly” into the vehicle waiting for them.
The woman can be seen taking a gun from one of the masked men and throwing her into the street. The weapon, which was later recovered at the scene, was fake, sources told BFMTV.
The screams draw the attention of the people passing by the street, who intervene, one armed with a fire extinguisher.
“I saw people asking to stop. A man went out to the street with a fire extinguisher to try to make these people leave,” a witness told French station BFMTV.
Finally, the attackers give up, the three men return to the van and the fourth suspect, the driver runs away.
Another woman who witnessed the scene told BFMTV, “I went out to the street and saw a man lying on the floor with a pistol beside him, quite bloody.”
After the attack ended, people on the street helped the victims. All three suffered minor injuries and were treated at the hospital, BFMTV said.
The woman, who according to the news vehicle was five months pregnant, was treated in shock, while her partner’s face was covered in blood.
The woman in the shoot is the daughter of the CEO and co -founder of Paymium, a French cryptocurrency exchange platform, according to AFP.
France’s Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau announced on Wednesday that he would hold a meeting with cryptocurrency entrepreneurs to discuss security in view of the wave of attacks, according to AFP.
After the attack, Paymium issued a statement asking authorities to “immediately adopt measures to reinforce the protection of companies in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.” The company thanked Retailleau for agreeing to meet with Paymium to “better discuss all these matters.”
The company also said it was “extremely sad” with Tuesday’s attack and extended its support to the victims’ families.
No arrest was made still in relation to the case, according to the CNN . The Public Prosecutor of Paris told the CNN which opened an investigation on prison attempted crimes, kidnapping or arbitrary detention committed by an organized gang, aggravated violence and participation in criminal association.
Chronopost said it does not believe that the van involved in the attempt to kidnap is from its company, but an attempt to imitate its brand.
“Observing the absence of vehicle theft in our company fleet and given the non -compliant markings in the images of the used vehicle, everything suggests that we are dealing with an imitation of our brand,” wrote the company in X.
Tuesday’s attack occurs after kidnapping from other cryptocurrency figures in France.
On May 1, the father of a cryptocurrency entrepreneur was kidnapped at the 14th Paris District and held hostage. Police released the victim, who was without a finger two days later on May 3.
Five suspects were arrested in the house where the victim was detained or nearby, plus two the next day. Two of them were later innocent.
In January, David Balland, co -founder of the French Cryptocurrency Ledger company, had his hand mutilated after he and his wife were kidnapped from his home in the center of France.
They were released after a police operation. Part of the redemption of 10 million euros ($ 11.2 million) in cryptocurrencies required by the kidnappers was paid, but “almost all cryptocurrency was tracked, frozen and seized,” said BMFTV, citing the prosecutor.
