Daughter of the current president of the Philippines stands as a vice candidate in the next elections

Sara Duterte-Carpio, the eldest daughter of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, presented her candidacy for vice president on Saturday, according to a party statement.

Duterte-Carpio, 43, who replaced her father as mayor of Davao City and belongs to a different political party, had already given mixed messages about the candidacy, despite opinion polls this year showing she would be the number one presidential candidate .

She will run in the May 9, 2022 elections for the Federal Party and Lakas-CMD coalition party, alongside Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the party’s choice for president.

Earlier this week, Duterte-Carpio withdrew her candidacy for re-election as mayor of Davao and resigned from her Davao-based party, Hugpong Ng Pagbabago.

The Philippines will go to the polls next year to decide the posts from president to governors, mayors and local authorities. The country elects its vice president separately from the president.

Duterte-Carpio will face vice presidential candidates, including his father’s close ally Senator Bong Go, Senate President Tito Sotto, Senator Kiko Pangilinan, former congressman Walden Bello and Dr. Willie Ong, according to with the CNN Philippines

Rodrigo Duterte will leave the presidency after serving six years in office. He was barred by the Philippine Constitution from seeking a second term.

A diverse range of aspirants are trying to succeed him.

Among the presidential candidates are Marcos Jr. – the controversial son and namesake of the deceased dictator deposed in 1986; former boxing champion and senator Manny Pacquiao; the current vice president and critic of Duterte, Leni Robredo; and Isko Moreno, Mayor of Manila and former actor.
