David di Donatello 2022: all the winners of the evening of the restart of the cinema (which continues to suffer)

«Cinema is a place of love. In the past, in the present, in the future “. This sentence so full of romanticism by Drusilla Foer is one of the most beautiful gems of the award ceremony David di Donatello 2022, which came at a particularly critical moment for Italian cinema given the very limited presence of the public in the hall in recent months. The machine, however, struggles to restart, and the efforts of the production chain are nothing short of admirable given the infinity of films produced this year but which, unfortunately, many spectators have not been able to see, lazy by the domestic cinemas that the platforms have deceived us to offer ourselves without having to get up from the sofa. So, as Silvio Orlando pointed out from the stage, this is the case with “Move your ass”, because the country that gave birth to Rossellini, Fellini, De Sica, Scola, Germi, Antonioni, Wertmüller and Visconti just to name a few cannot curl up on itself while the rest of Europe proliferates and grinds support. In this, the triumph of It was the hand of God as best film it is certainly significant, given that, thanks to Netflix that distributed it, it is probably the most viewed and known title by the public.

Drusilla Foer and Sabrina Ferilli

Vittorio Zunino Celotto

The film, the most intimate and bare among those in Paolo Sorrentino’s filmography, also gets, among others, the David di Donatello for best supporting actress in Teresa Saponangelo, a talent that exploded too late, and to the best direction, allowing Sorrentino to reach 6. “I have to thank the Neapolitans, the crew, the actors, my wife Daniela, my children Anna and Carlo and a girl, Ludovica Bargellini, who has been gone for a few days”limited himself to saying the director who shared the evening with another title, Freaks Out by Gabriele Mainetti, managed to bring home, as we had expected, all the technical David, from the scenography to the make-up. The most welcome surprises came, however, at the time of the awarding of the prizes to the actors: from the very young Eduardo Scarpetta, that when he won the David di Donatello as Best Supporting Actor for Here I laugh dedicated to his great-great-grandfather – had the same dismayed expression as Mahmood at the moment of the victory in Sanremo in 2019, and the sweet Swamy Roll, Best Actress in a Leading Role for To Chiara at just 17 years old.

Standing ovation well deserved, then, for the third David by Silvio Orlandoheld in his hands thanks to his masterful interpretation in Still air: for him a special thanks to his wife Maria Laura – “He’s fine, though” – and to that magical industry that changed his life more than thirty years ago. Together with the lively emotion of Manuel Agnelliwinner of the best original song for Diabolikto the dutiful homage to Monica Vitti and to the ultra-pop exhibition of Umberto Tozzi, there was some hitch in this 67th edition of the David di Donatello. As the segment ofIn Memoriam, the one that pays tribute to all the workers who left us over the course of the year and that the direction did not make the most of, choosing to focus the camera on the singing performance of Drusilla Foer – true revelation of the evening – rather than on the roundup of faces and of the names that flowed behind her. We realize how much cinema and television are two parallel and often incommunicable worlds, however the choice of Rai1 to broadcast the ceremony in prime time, especially in this historical moment, it is necessary, as well as a duty: a heartfelt tribute to an industry that has done and is doing so much for our art in the world and that we continue to treat in an unworthy and unjust way.
